[From Our Correspondenta.] LEESTON. The employees of the Islington freezing work's held their annual picnic on the Leeston> Recreation Ground' on Saturday. They travelled by special train, arriving at Leeston shortly before 11 a.m., and leaving at 6.30 p.m. Athletic and other events were run o,ff during the day.
TAI TAPU. At the. fortnightly meeting of the Tai Tapu Ladies' "Working Guild, the usual parcels of goods were forwarded to the lied Cross Centre iu Christchurch ; and as the result of an appeal on behalf of the Lady Liverpool Fund a box containing fifty-four tins of jam, one case of condensed milk, one box of boot laces, boxes of sweets and eight pairs of socks and handkerchiefs^ 'was sent to Mrs Holland (Mayoress). Since the inauguration of the guild in May last, two" members have put up. a record in knitting. Mrs Woodcock has knitted fifty-two pairs of socks and twentv-five* Balaclavas, whilst Mrs Bing has knitted fifty-two pains of socks and has also made garments..
BELFAST. .A display of jam made by the mern> hers of the Belfast Branch of the Red Cross ■ Societv was held in the Town Hall last night. About 1600 tins ]a r belled ''Home-made Jam, from Belfast, New Zealand." formed, the uisplay, which was nicely arranged. The jam will be on view again this evening.
ASHBURTON. \ A meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U-. was held, ou Friday evening, when N.G. Brother L. Christmas presided. The secretary, P.O. Brother F. Pritchard, on behalf of the Management Committee, presented the balance-sheet, which showed the lodge to be in a sound financial position? The consideration of the business sheet for the annual conference was left in the hands of the delegates. The following were elected delegates tio the conference to be held on Thursday: --Brothers L. Christmas, R. Baker, F. Pritchard and E. H. Childs. Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted at the Ashburton St Andrews Presbyterian Church on Sunday, when the Rev George Miller occupied the pulpit. The church was tastefully decorated, and the sermons were of an appropriate nature. . ;-•'•' '""■''' A Scottish concert., organised by the members of the Ashburton Scottish Society, in aid of the Ashburton County War Rolief Fund, was given in the Theatre Royal, Ashburton, on Saturday evening. There was a very large attendance. An excellent- programme was given by members of the Christchurch Caledonian Society. In a brief introductory address Mr James Cow, who presided; announced that encores would have to be paid for, and in this way £74 was collected towards the, funds. The onlv local contributor was Mrs John Forrester, who played a pianoforte solo. "Blair Athol.'' At the termination of the programme the visiting performers were thanked on behalf of the Ashburton County Scottish Society by Chieftain W. C. Blair, and Presi« deut Charles Stewart Thomas responded on behalf of the visitors. It is expected that the total net proceeds wil' reach £l-30.
