DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Diocesan Synod of Christchurch held' recently, the Bishop welcomed the new diocesan registrar, Mr G. A. Thompson. Bishop Julius referred to the loss sustained by Canon Purchas in the death of his wife. The Bishop was requested to write to Canon Purchas expressing the deepest sympathy of the Standing Committee *in his trouble, members standing while the motion was passed. The Bishop referred l to the evils of mixed military services, and stated that he had asked Canon, Burton to use his influence in the desired direction. Bishop Julius also referred to the drain upon the_ dioceses caused by the need of supplying chaplains for military service; and the, present unsatisfactory methods of their appointment. The shortage of clergy in flu's diocese from the cause referred to was serious. It was resolved that Archdeacon Gosset and' Mr H. D. Andrews, with the members of the Board of Nomination, should be a sub-committee for ' the temporary rearrangement of cures during the war. with power to act. The name of Archdeacon Ensor was subsequently added. A report by the Subcommittee for Church Missions was adopted. The Dean and Mr Bean wore chosen as a sub-committee to assist the Bishop in the. preparations for the coining session, in Cliristohurch of the General Synod. Plans and specifications for.a vicarage at Lower Ricoartou were re-

commended to the Church Property Trustees for adoption. It was resolved that Messrs "Andrews and Bean should be appointed to go' into the question of office ' equipment, together witH two others to be appointed by the Church Property Trustees. It was agreed that the Church Property Trustees should'be recommended to pay to the churchwardens at Preebleton an annual, sum equivalent to that formerly received as rent of a reserve, howsold. • •- *. w '- «"•' »** *• It was revived to acknowledge a letter from the Standing Committee of the dioceso of Wainpu relative to chur<-h parade services in military camps, and to express the hope that the matter will be dealt with by the General Synod. ' An application by the present Vicar of St Albans for a removal grant was deferred to the next meeting. A vote of £25 from the surplus at the discretion of the Standing Committee was made to the Church of England Men's Society on its application. The. registrar reported that thirty-three of the clergv had joined the accident insurance fund for the current vear. Outstanding advances of cle.rgv stipends and the balances of church fund's were reported.
