SPORTING.

NFAYS AND NOTES. Most of the Canterbury horses which competed at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting last week returned home by a special train, which arrived at Sockburn soon after seven o'clock yesterday morning. W. M'Donald remained behind with First Glance, Moddite and Silent Way, hut he will probably return to-day. The sale of Reval in Dunedin last week was arranged' in order to close apartnership account. In his early days Reval was raced in partnership by Messrs E. H. Raid and A. S. Elworthy. but after a time Mr O. Studholmo bought out Mr Ehvorthy's interest. Mr Pioid died last month, and the gelding was sold to wind up the partnership, Mr C. Studholmo becoming the sole owner at oOOgs. Reval should not bo dear at that price, as he is just coming on nicely, and may easily win back tho purchase price before the close of this season.

Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., has nominated Specialform and Samisen for the Nelson Jockey Club's meeting, which will be held on March 8 and 0. Some of the form at the Woodville meeting was very difficult to follow. There were, several case.s, it is said, in which questions-jnight have been asked with advantagefjn>ut nothing was done.

Taringamutu has been an expensive mare to follow lately. In the first part of the season she ran some good races, but she has let her backers down badly several times lately. At Woodville this week she was favourite for the chief event of the day, hut third place, in tho Cup was the nearest she got to winning. It lopks just now as if the filly was in need of a. rest, as she has been hard at it since the spring.

Lord Multifid, believed to he the fastest horse ever sent from Taranaki to race in Australia, is to be brought back xo New Zealand from the Commonwealth, as tho injuries met with when ho collided with a fence will prevent him racing. He will bo usod for? stud purposes. Ho was handicapped on his private reputation in some of the races he was entered for on the other side, but his owner says would have lived uj) to it had he not been unfortunately injured. Tn bis one race when only half strung up he showed what ho was capable of over there.

When Prince Eddie finished just out ol" a place in the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap of 1913 ho gave the impression that ho would turn out more than useful as a'jumper. Since then, however, the big son of Royal Fusilier lias not acted up to early expectations and his win in the Maiden Hurdle Handicap at the recent To Kuiti meeting marked'his first success over obstacles. It is probable that Prince Eddie will bo given a, chance to earn distinction as a steeplechaser in tho winter. Wild West, by Soult—The Squaw, continues to pay his way in New South Wales. At a recent country meeting ho won a seven-furlong welter race, carrying lOst and conceding about two stone to each of his' opponents. W. Davies, the ex-Wellington ownertrainer, won a race at Wyong, Now South Wales, this month, with War Queen, an eight-year-old mare by Field Battery—St Winifred, by Sylvia Park —led a. by Castor—Welcome Katie.

The position of handicapper to the Victoria Racing Club is vacant, Mr W. A Menzies having resigned, on the ground of ill-health, after acting since 1903; The office is worth £750 a year, and Mr Menzies also acted for the Wuliamstown Racing Club. As Mr R. K. Mnitland recently resigned several handicapping appointments, there appear to be several good openings for weight adjusters in Melbourne at present. The two-yoar-old filly Queen Battery, by Comedy King—Cross Battery, gave further evidence of her quality this month, at the Tasmanian Racing Club's meeting, hy scoring an easy win in the Elwick Futurity Stakes, in which she carried 9st 21b, including a. 141 b penalty. The succQeeding event was won by Honol'ine, sister to Anna Garlovna, by Sou It—Cz'arevna. It was Honorine's third win during her visit to Tasmania, and as she carried lOst 31b the performance was an attractive one. The Soult mare is now trained, by J. Scobie, having been purchased by a patron of his stable from E. A. Connolly early this year.

The steeplechaser Bullawarra returned to Melbourne early this month, looking well after his sojourn in England. He showed, however, no delight in being returned to Australia. On the contrary, he played up a good deal, and it took half an hour to land him. He had eventually to be blindfolded. Bullawarra was shipped to England with the idea of winning the last Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, but his' trip was no* a success. He quite failed to reproduce his best Australian form and did not succeed in winning a race. He fell in the Grand National Steeplechase. The avent has been abandoned this year, otherwise Bullawarra would have been left in England to have another try to win it. He will probably be given a chance of again distinguishing himsejf over jumps in Australia. Ho was in the fronk rank among the jumping brigade when he left the Commonwealth, and at present there is a great dearth of smart junipers in Australia. Bullawarra. is ten years old, so that he. is not. particularly old. as steeplechasers go.
