THE FERRY SERVICE.
IMPROVED BERTHING FACILITIES AT WELLINGTON. Within, the memory of even the oldest inhabitant in Wellington it has been the custom to berth the Lyttelton-Wel-lir.gton ferry steamers at Queen's Wharf, states the "Evening Post." Soon, however, this practice 1 will be a thing of the past, for within three months the steamers engaged in the run across Cook Strait will berth, at what is at present known as the Wool Wharf. The work of conversion is well advanced, and the time for completion of the contract expires on March'3l. The old wharf has been widened by 34ft to m width of 70ft. and has been extended 100 ft. A shelter shed, 230 ft by 30ft, is now in course of eraction. A luggage office is being installed adjoining the berth, also a ticket office ifor the issue of tickets by the Union Steam Ship Company. Before the contract, for extensions was entered into the bottom of the harbour had to be dredged to a depth of 34ft, to provide sufficient depth for the ferry steamers at low water. .' - '.'
The new ferry wharf will have many advantages as far. as facilities for passengers aro concerned. The present scheme is-'to continue the. tramlint nloag Waterloo Quay and up Bunny Street, and connect with the Lambton Quay and Featherston Street lines. The site of the proposed new railway station fronts Bunny Street, and is only 22-5 vards from the new ferry wharf. The tram stop will only be about 100 vards away. The extra berthing-space will gr.eatlv relieve the present con-' "option on Queen's Wharf, as the jhar! will he available for general shipping purposes. '. -;
