PRIMARY SCHOOLS' CRICKET.
PRESENTATION OF' SHIELD. On Friday afternoon a large and representative gathering of teachers and members of the North Canterbury Public Schools' Amateur Athletic Association assembled at the Normal School to meet Mr J. Caughley, who some time ago announced his intention of presenting a shield for the cricket competition conducted bv the association.
Mr F. T. Evans, who was in the chair, welcomed Mr Caughley. and congratulated him on his appointment as Assistant-Director of Education. Mr Evans referred to the interest tor Caughley had taken in sports generally, and expressed the opinion that without the school games the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces could not have been trained in so short a tune as was taken. He said that, it was gratifying to know that some of those in high places in education realised tho importance of athletics and school games. ' ' ,
Mr Caughley, in presenting the shield, expressed great pleasure at being able to leave behind him in Canterbury something that would be useful and that would last for many years. He hoped the shield would be the means of creating new life, in school cricket, and said that possibly some of the boys now playing would later have sons who would compete for the same shield. On behalf of the association Mr Evans thanked Mr Caughley for his splendid gift. Miss Chaplin and Messrs Bean. Seay and 'Waller also spoke. Hearty cheers were given for Mr Caughley. Tho shield, which is enclosed in a glass case, is a very fine one. It is of silver, on walnut wood. One clever piece of work is an engraving of a cricket field. Separate small shields are attached for each school winning the competition. The names of all previous winning schools are recorded. The shield will be on view in Messrs Simpson and Williams's window for a fewi days. It will afterwards be removed to West Christchurch School, whoso team Avon the competition last year.
