A MUR I COUNTY TO TAKE PART. At a recent meeting of the executive of the Queen election a letter was received from the Amuri County Committee asking to be allowed to enter the* Qiieen election, but to retain all the money collected for the Hanmer Red Cross hospital. The executive decided that it. could not accept the offer, and n committee was appointed to wait on the Amuri committee to discuss the matter.
The conference took place at Culverden yesterday, the executive being represented by Messrs M . H. Clark, J. S. Barrett and G. L. Donaldson. Mr D. Rutherford presided. After the matter had been discussed at some length ihe Amuri committee decided to take part in the Queen election and to support a candidate in the inter-county contest for the Queen of the Hills. It was nisr> decided that the money collected should he forward-' ed to the executive for the general purposes cf the fund.
PATRIOTIC BAZAAR. Colonel George J. Smith, chairman of the Soldiers’ Bazaar Committee, and Mr Samuel M'Miuray. chairman of the Timber. Building and Furniture Trades Bazaar Committee, write:—S’r. -With your kind permission we should like to make an earnest appeal to the people of this city and province for assistance. A great effort, is now being made to piace the Canterbury Patriotic Fund in a sound financial position, so that all c.-ur sons, who have fought so nobly and are still fighting gallantly, in order to save the Empire from the ravages of despicable Hun, shall bo amply provided for in case ot necessity. Our sections have jointly organised a grand bazaar and jumble sale on a. stupendous scale, to be held in the King Edward Barracks on Thursday. Friday and Saturday. the 211 h, 2otli and 26th inst. Roughly speaking, the Patriotic Fund in Auckland, Wellington and Otago exceeds £300.000 in each province, whereas our Canterbury fund is only £IOO.OOO. Just think of it. Where (Ttngo, for instance, can spend £3 on a disabled representative, we can afford only £l. Our men are equally deserving of a like generous provision. We are desperately anxious to raise at least. £2OOO by’this bazaar and jumble sale, and if the people cf tl is city and district- will support us largc-hcartedly the scheme will be a wonderful success. and our returned soldiers will have no cause to regret that they are Canter hurv men. Me appeal for donations of goods, produce and stock : iu fact, nr.vthing that cau be converted into money. "The time is very short, so we hope those who wish to assist the fund will kindly communicate immediately with the committee.
