SPORTING.

SEWS AND NOTES

After assisting on the first two days of tlio "Dunedin Jockey Club's autumn meeting, and winning a race each day with Panmure, G. Price decided not to wait for the finish of the fixture. He left Dunedin yesterday, and went north by last nights boat. Ihe two-year-old Cease hire, who accompanied Panmure to \V ingatui, caught n cold on lhe trip and was unable to race. Price is anxious to get home a (min, in order to superintend the voi k of his team for the Wanganui and other meetings that are coining on.

Some- time ago it was stated that the well-known North Island horseman, A. Julian, had decided to retire from the saddle, so far a.s jumping events were concerned, and that he would in luture coniine his attention to iiotteis and pacers. He has apparently chamrcd' his mind, however, as he lias been "riding over obstacles quite recently, and is now announced as haying been engaged to pilot h ingot in the hurdle races at the Wanganui meeting. •

Wardancer atoned for some recent disappointments by winning the Cut Handicap at Win gat ui on 1 hursday. His success was freely anticipated by those who have watched bis work at Rieearton, where the brother to Wm* step is looked on as a particularly promising two-year-old. He has had an interrupted preparation this season, but he looks like being benefited by time, and be niav be found m the front rank of his‘ago when it comes to racing over longer journeys next season.

winner of the Henley Handicap at the Dunedin meeting on Thursday, lias not done much racing. Early this month, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, lie ran third to •'Marc Antony and British Rose in the Halswell Handicap, nine furlongs, only fading out in the last bit. As a result of this form ho had a. lot or admirers for the Gladbrook Handicap, on tho first day at Wingatui, but ho was unluekv in the early stages and had to he content with second place. In Thursday’s race ho made no mistake. his win being gained in particularly hollow style. Cincinnati!* is a very attractive galloper, who has already gained a big reputation at Riccarton. and be gives promise of developing into a very useful horse. At Gisborne recently, Mr John Clark offered for sale five geldings by Sabretache. For a. • three-year old otiu of Frolic, dam of Rupalui and Cally Bridge, there was keen competition, and Mr W. S. Davidson secured him for 500 gs. v Mr H. de Lautour and Mr F. J. Lysnar each bought two of the remaining quartet.

The combination of the Stepniak maro Tinopai and the jockey, H. Robinson, would scorn to be unbeatable in the Te Kuiti Cup. Two years ago Tinopai was weighted at 7st, but a Mb apprentice allowance was claimed, and tiio filly won from Admiral Soult. Lastyear she carried 9.5. including 71b penalty for winning at Rotorua, and scored verv easily. This year, with Bst- ,10.1 b in' the saddle, she scored her third successive victory..

i>. J. Price was a buyer at a recent sale iu Melbourne, securing an Eng-lish-bred gelding by St Frusquin, for 40gs.

The imported horse, Red Dennis, who recently won the Foundation Day Cup at Williamstown, was sold a few weeks before the race for 220 gs. It seemed a small price, but it is said that the horse has developed a fiendish temper. Some proof of this is provided by the fact that the Victoria Racing Club has refused -his nomination, so that bis opportunities for racing will bo restricted.
