SPORTING.

* F. E. Jones has an excellent record in connection with the Dunedin Champagne 'Stakes. He had his first winding mount on Husbandman in 1903, and*.since then lias been successful on Sharpshooter, Counterfeit, Brown Owl, Nightwatch, Angelina, Adjutant and Good- Hope. Only twice since lie rode Jiis first winner has he missed this event and on each of those occasions lie was in a place, while in 1907, when lie had his first mount in the race, he

finished second. In ten successive -years he has been on the winner seven times, on the second horse twice, and on the third horse once. This is a riding • record that will tako a lot of beating. In the matter of. wins, however, 11. Der- • rett-can beat Jones's performance in the same event, as he has nine suc- ». cesses to his credit. His victories were gained on Oudeis, Gipsy King, Carbine, Cajolery, Bombshell. Gold Medallist, Courtier, Menschikoff and Lady Landon but thev extended over a lengthy ■ period, the first being gained in 1883 ..--jiuid the last in 1906..

•The Highden trainer, G. Price, had never been on the IVingntui course Prior to hisi present trip south, but he lias no cause to regret his excursion into fresh fields, as he yvoii tivo races With the aid of the imported horse, Panmure. In his younger days, however. he was no stranger to Forbury, and he accompanied Liberator to the old course twenty-two years ago, when P. Butler’s useful gelding won the Dunedin Cup.

Bore is establishing a good record 'as a* hurdler, in which department of the racotg game he has started six times. He failed in his first two attempts, but the remaining four efforts have all ended successfully. He has how worked his way to the top class among gouth Island hurdlers, a very creditable performance for a young horse who iias been loss than twelve months in work. He is trained by F. D. Jones, who has done very well at the business during the brief experience he has had. Iteval has not been long in work, following on a spell, but lie has already demonstrated that lie retains his old forth. At the Canterbury Jockey Club’s .summer meeting lie ran second to Xightwatch in the Craven Plate, while on Wednesday at Wingatui he was third to Panmure and Robert Bell in the Publicans’ Handicap. Yesterday, in the Domain Handicap, ho mot a fair field, giving weight to all his opponents, and .he won in good style. The racing will probably benefit him, and lie may be . expected to earn further distinction at the autumn meetings. Martian Maid, who broke a leg while contesting the Dunedin Cup on Wednesday, was a six-year-ohl raaro by Martian—Greek Maid, by MusketryPsyche. She' was bred by Mr T. Sheenan. and won two races in his colours as a tjircc-year-old, after which she went to Southland, being purchased by ill- W. T. Hazlett. Her racing as a four-year-old was all unsuccessful, but last season she showed improved form, winning several decent stakes, while this .season she won the chief event on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting. At the time of her mishap she was running prominently in the Dunedin Cup, and it looks as if the owner lost a very useful performer. Martian Maid was a sister to Byron and Dorian, the latter being a three-year-old colt who has shown decent form in Mr Hazlet]t’s colours this season.

Mr J. Fleming, the owner of the pacer Our Thorpe, has decided to abandon the trip to America with bis horse. Chir Thorpe had a bad fall when attacking the record at Forbnry Park last month, and has not yet recovered. The horse was recently examined by a veterinary surgeon, who stated that, whilst it was impossible to accurately arrive at the full extent of the injuries to Our Thorpe, he

stronglv advised Mr Fleming not to take a'nv risks with his horse. All arrangements had been made for the trip to be undertaken,, and Mr Flmincr is keenly disappointed that the accid'ent lias upset his plans.

.T. Con wav took his two horses. Van Coronado and Albert \VaIW north last nio-ht, to race at the Manawatu and Wanganui Trotting Clubs’ meetin"s. A nun our is current that the American may decide to remain in the North Island.

M. Edwards left last night with General Victor and Harold Devon, who have engagements at the Manawatu Trotting‘Club’s meeting at Palmerston North on Saturday. It is Edwards intention to return on the day of the meeting, in order to attend to>his large team, but he will leave again on Tuesday with Admiral Drake and Peggie Hiion, who will be raced at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting.

A. Fleming left 'last night with the two American mares. Alice Shaw and Queen Patch, who will he racing at Palmerston North on Saturday. The trotting marc, Alice Sliaw«#r v aced unsuccessfully at Forbury last’month, but Queen Patch has not yet started in any race in the Dominion. Several Canterbury trainers who have horses engaged at the Manawatu Trotting. Club's meeting arc returning after the” meeting, to get their horses ready for the South Canterbury Club’s meeting. which is to be held at Timaru on March 2. On the other hand, a good contingent from here will visit Wanganui only and will have to hurry back to catch the South Canterbury fixture. The field for the Dunedin Cup included three Riccarton-trained horses —Snub. First Glance and Bee—and when betting closed, they were the popular fancies in the order named. Not one of the trio, however, overlooked like a winner, and they all finished some distance behind the placed division.

The stallions Kentlock and Ringform, who did stud duty in North Otago last spring, shaped well at Wingatui on Wednesday, though each of them had to be satisfied with second! place. Kentlock, who is an Australian bjrod horse by Malster—Satire, by Lochiel, had not raced previously since he came to New Zealand, but he should be equal do getting among the winners before the close of the season. 'The success of Sir Malt in the Berwick Handicap at Wingatui on ’Wednesday came as n bit of a surprise to those who had closely watched his ear-lier-public efforts. ■ He had frequently shown plenty of pace, but without any inclination to stay. On Wednesday, however, ' he began smartly, and though ho looked like stopping at one stage, he went on again, -finishing up the seven furlongs in highly attractive style. The Australian bred gelding is likely to do a lot better yet,’ as the racing will probably improve him.
