SIR CLEMENTS MARKHAM.

Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received January 31, 9.10 p.m.) LONDON, January 31. / Sir Clements Markham died from '■shock and burns sustained in a fire at his residence. (Sir Clements Robert Markham, K.C.8., late president of the Royal Geographical Society, was born in StillingSeet, York, in 1830. He was educated at the Westmiftster School, and entered the Navy in 1844. He served in the Arctic Expedition of ISSU-O.L, ■ and the following year.he left the Navy to travel in Peru. ; He introduced the quinine-bearing cinchona trees from Peru to British India between 1809 and . 1862, and then he went. as geographer to the Abyssinian Expedition. He was secretary to the Royal Geographical Society from 1863 to 1888, and secretary to the Hakluyt Society from 1808 to 1887. In 1867 he was appointed assistant secretary to the India Office, • and held that, post for ten years. . He was the author of many works on exploration and on historical subjects including a History of Peru, Life of Sir LeopoW M’Clin took, the _ Fighting Veres, History of Persia, Life of Colurnbus and “ Ollanta,” an Inca drama translated from the Quicha.)
