THIRTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS.
SHORTAGE IN CHRISTCHURCH
AREA
SEVENTY-EIGHT INFANTRYMEN .WANTED. \ Three- days ago attention was called to the fact that of the 110 'infantrymen required for the Christchurch quota for tho'-Thirteen tit Reinforcements, due to leave for Wellington on February 9, only thirty.-ono had-been obtained.-- It was hoped .that the".-"announcement woidd encourage qualified men to hasten to offer .their services, but the net gain since the'appeal appears to bo one man. The batch of recruits medically examined on Tuesday evening resulted in three. lit infantrymen being secured for tho Thirteenth Reinforcements, but by an unfortunate coincidence three other men who had arranged to go with that-- draft have withdrawn, and will now leave later., "It is the experience with every quota that men who had promised to go with a certain draft, hud as the date of departure) draws near that private business prevents them" leaving at the date arranged.; These withdrawals, of course, cannot be prevented, but they add to the difficulties of the military authorities. The comparative boom experienced recently in recruiting is likely to cause misconception. It is not - generally •realised that many of these.enlistments arc from, men who cannot arrange to go to camp for two or. three months, or even longer ahead. Meanwhile, each quota must be tilled, and if that for the Thirteenth Reinforcements is to be anything like complete, it is an urgent necessity for men. to enlist in the infantry at tho earliest possible moment. It is suggested by those in touch .with recruiting that some of the men who have already enlisted and been passed as fit, but who do not propose to leave with the Thirteenth Reini'orcementej might see their way clear, to expedite their departure for camp.
