PERSONAL NOTES.
Mr C.'.A. Bates, of Waimate, has received word that his sou Harold Allen Bftes,. previously reported wounded on. August 28, 1910, has been reported killed. The fallen soldier was well known in Temuka, having received: his education.at the Temuka District High School. A few years ago he took up a position in the North Island, but on the outbreak of the war lie enlisted as
a trooper and left with the Wellington Mounted Rifles iu the. Maui Body.
MEMORIAL SERVICE. A memorial service for the late Trooper George Duncan Abbott, son of Mrs Abbott, of Little River, Southbridge, was conducted' bv tho Rev G. Lindsay at St. John's Church, Southbridge, on Sunday morning. Trooper Abbott was a brother of the late Corporal Amoral Abbott, formerly of the Ist Canterbury Regiment (C.Y.C). who went, away with the main bedy of the Expeditionary Force, and met his death during* the early, stages of the w, and, was a brother of Sister Abbott, one of the. survivors of the Marquette disaster. At the close of his sermon, Mr Lindsay stated that the late Trooper Abbott went away with tho Third Reinforcements and took part in the great struggle about August 27 or 25. since which time nothing had been heard of him; At first he. was simply 3-eportwl missing. Now. after a. Court of Inquiry had been held, the crnclusion arrived at was that, he was dead. From his infancy Trooper Abbott had beeu. eouner-ted with tho-con-gregation of St John's Church, and during recent years had been' closelv identified with every department of the church's activities. He had been a member of the Bible class and one of the nrominent lenders of the Youiig Men's Club. He was also a member of the managing committee of the church, and', seldom failed to attend the meetings. He had oerformed manv kindly deeds and rendered much help to others in a quiet, unostentatious way. which showed that his heart was full of goodwill towards his fellow-men.
