PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
NEW HALL AT LINWOOD. The hall which has been erected at Limvocd by the Presbyterian Church for the. purposes of church services: and a Sunday school is built of "pdilite" and wood, and is very tastefully finished both outside, and inside, reflecting credit on the architects, Messrs England Bros., and oh the contractor, Mr F. Shaw.
The opening services were held on Sunday, and were very largely attended. The Rev J. Paterson conducted' the forenoon and afternoon services, and Mr Temiaut the evening service. After his sermon-in the morning, Mr Paterson outlined the progress of the work in Lin wood and tlie steps that had led to the erection of the hall. When further development took place, it was intended to erect a church building. The initial tea meeting and entertainment was held' on. Tuesday, uhe Rev J. Paterson presided, and amongst those present were Revs C. Murray and F. Rule, C. Strand (Methodist), andiH. A. Job (Congregational), Mr Bickerstaff, of New Brighton, and Mr J. Tennent. After tea had been served by the ladies, the Rev C. Murray, on behalf of the Christchurch Presbytery, congratulated the Linwood people, on the possession of the hall, which proved the enterprising spirit- in which the Church'provided for the spiritual welfare of the district and also of the young people. Short addresses were delivered by the Revs F. Rule, H. A. Job, and C. Strand, and Mr Bickerstiff, conveying the congratulations of their respective congregations and testifying to the esteem in. which Mr Tennent was held, and the value of his, work in the district. During the evening Mr Paterson presented Mi' Tcn'uerit with .a number of theological works from, the Linwood Cammitt.ee as a token of regard, and Miss Cunningham (organist) received a presentation in'recognition of her 'services. Songs were contributed bv Miss I. Malcolm, Mesdames Cuddie'and J. Tennent, the Rev J. Paterson, and Mr JS'Leod,, and a pianoforte solo was played by Miss I. Gib)/.; On Wednesday evening a gathering of teachers, parents, and scholars in connection with the Sunday school was held, at which tea was served .and a programme of musical and elocutionary items was given.
