RECENT CERMAN ATTACKS,
FURTHER DETAILS
’Hie High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, January 25.
New dotails confirm the report that the enemy attempted an attack at the mouth of the Yser and were dispersed by the Allies’ artillery. The Germans were unable to debouch except at one point, where some corps penetrated the Allies’ trenches, being chased out immediately after, very lively grenade fighting causing sensible losses to the enemy. In Artois an action was conducted yesterday against the Allies’ positions east of Neuville St-Vaast, which completely failed. It was resumed at the end of the day on a greater scale, after a fresh series of mine explosions, accompanied by a very violent bombardment. Tho Germans attacked on a front of about fifteen hundred metres in the angle formed by the road from Neuville St Vaast to Thelus. The enemy sucoeeded at two points, where the French firing trench was overthrown by explosions, the enemy occupying craters, most of which were retaken almost immediately. Iu the Vosges the French effectively bombarded enemy works at Ban-de-Sapt. I
THE GERMAN VERSION.
(Received January 26, 8.15 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, January 25. A German communique states: —Our artillery strongly shelled the enemy positions iu Flanders, and shattered trenches, causing heavy losses. Wed'estroyed the Dempler Tower of Nieuport Cathedral, which had afforded the enemy a good observation post. East of Neuville St Voast, after successful mine explosions we attacked the French advanced trenches and captured three machine guns and 100 prisoners.'
ARTILLERY WORK.
BOMBARDMENT IN BELGIUM
The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, January 26. There was a violent bombardment of the enemy works by the British artillery in Belgium and in Artois, there was a lively cannonade east of Neuvillo, St Vaast and Wailly, south-west of Arras. North of the Aisne, an important convoy was dispersed in the region of Craonne. An enemy heavy battery, which was attempting to bombard a bridge at Berry-au-Bac, was damaged by our heavy fire.
