The Hon James Allen, Minister of Defence, arrived from Wellington yes- -e terday, accompanied by Major Sleen-.’. man (Assistant Military Instructor), and Major Norton Francis (Base Records Office). Australia on Monday. Mr J. H. Maynard Jias been elected unopposed to the vacancy on the Sumner Borough Council. The Rev P. H. Pritchett, of Mount Somers, is at present in a private hospital at Ashburton undergoing treatment for rheumatism. Chaplain-Captain J. R. Burgin, late vicar of St Stephens’ Anglican Church, Ashburton, who is in oamo at Rangi- . otu, has been promoted to be Major. Dr Blackmore, of the Consumption Sanatorium, is absent on his annual holiday. Dr Duncan is undertaking, the “ duties during the period of absence. Private R. Hoskins, of Aulsebrook’s Company, who is leaving with the Tenth Reinforcements, was presented by Mr Purse, on behalf of the staff, with a wristlet watch as a token of esteem. -

Mr B. Tripp, of Timaru, - is visiting Nelson, Marlborough, and tho West Coast with a view to furthering Red Cross work. In Nelson he has found matters so well organised that there is no need for him to call meetings there. Private Arthur Broom, who returned to Ashburton on December 26 at>d was admitted to the Ashburton Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound in the foot, has been discharged, but it will be some considerable time before ho will be able to use his foot. The Dunedin “Star” states that Mr Frank Graham, of Christchurch, well known in musical circles in various parts of the Dominion, and at one time a prominent member of the Carl Rosa Opera Company, has decided to. take up his residence in the southern city.

The death of Mr Lancelot Indermauer, district officer for the Ellice Group of Islands, and Deputy Commissiner of the Western Pacific, is recorded in the “ Samoan Times.” lie was a Cambridge graduate, and was formerly a barrister and solicitor a: Tonga.

W. Bowles (Newcastle-on-Tvne) and Dr L. Sinclair (Tnihape). Mrs T. J. Hunter, of Ashburton, has received word that her brother, Lieutenant-Colonel Parkes, of Auckland, who has been in charge of the New Zealand Hospital at Pont da Koubbeh, has been appointed DeputyDirector of Medical Services for the hospitals at Alexandria and Cairo. Lieutenant-Colonel Parkes recently had the distinction of C.M.G. conferred upon him.

At a meeting of directors of the Warrarapa Caledonian Society, held last week, the following resolution was unanimously carried:—“That the directors place on record their appreciation of the services of Mr 1). MacO. Walker, of Christchurch (who acted as judge of pipe music at the New Year’s Day sports), and that the directors recommend that Mr Walker’s services Its permanently secured.”

Mr Ross Clark, chief officer of ths Katoa, was paid a manly compliment at Auckland on Saturday by the sailors of the vessel. Newlands, missioned who had enlisted in the ranks. Appreciation was expressed of the good wort the guest had done and the noble stun he had taken.
