PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

GILBY'S COLLEGE.. ••The annual prize- distribution in connection with Gilby|s College wa9 hold in the Alexandra Hall on Saturday night. The Mayor of. '.Chriatdhurch, (Mr H.' Holland) presided over a large attendance of scholars and friends.

• _ Th* Mayor congratulated the college on K its success during the past year, and on its : iilcrea»ed attendance.. Thia . indicated that people weTe realising more and more the value of .education. Young people were often -too anxious to get to work, without taking a secondary school education, and in this way inany. promising young lives had been blight..ccL Jn order 1o 'succeed in life, every man and every-woman should have a good cduottjtion. Thia would be more apparent after the war, when there would be a large *nd urgent demand for educated- men and woMen.

The annual report was read by Mr M. Gilby. ■ Mr H. G. Ell, M.P.. said that he wisheu ■to congratulate the college cm its increased attendance, which was an indication of the successful work the institution was performing. Education wag a very important thing, and could not, and should not, bo confined to the.Stato, but must also be promoted by private enterprise. A private college, which was in a sense in opposition to tho Stats colleges, helped to stimulate a healthy rivalry, and caused criticism of the Stale in, stitutions. Criticism was good for a man, it made him feel' all the stronger, and it was equally good for an institution. ' Addressing the lady students, Mr Ell said, that the war had given them great opportunities > it had opened now positions to them, and he hoped, that they would try and equip themselves to fill' these positions. In conclusion he congratulated tho college on the class of men and women it turned out. One of the most efficient private secretaries he knew, the private secretary of the Hon W. F. Massey, was an-ex-pupil of Gilby's College. • '. . -The following prize* and certificates were then presented by the Mayor:— PRIZES. • Gladys Sewell, Ist (equal) shorthand ■typist's letter test, Ist'in'business methods, bookkeeping ' (intermediate).
