RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF BOARD. - The Rivngiora. High School Board met last evening; present—Messrs R. Ball (chairman), H. Boyd. F. Horrell, 0. W. Bell, R, Collie. J. Marshall, J. Stevenson and C, I, Jennings. A circular was received' from the Education Department regarding representations made by several secondary school beard' that, owing to the impracticabi.ity at present of obtaining suitable assistant teachers for boys’ sen cols, they were unable to comply with tlm requirements of the to the tenth schedule of the Education Act referring to staffs and salaries, and asking for r. relaxation of the conditions. The Department hold that it' had no authority to vary the terms of the Act, b\it it recognised at the same time the exceptional character of the difficulty, and was prepared to meet the board in a spirit cf reasonable compromise. It could not, however, 'con-, sider itself justified in paying, during the currency of the war. rates of capitation in excess of the amount paid out bv the board in salaries and incidentals.

The Department of Agriculture wrote that'arrangements had been arrived at between the Education Department and the Agricu.tural Department on the subject of agricultural experiments at schools generally, which would come into operation iiext season. In the meantime, the Fields Instructor had been requested to'assist the Rangiora High School, this season in the same manner as in the past. A circular was received from the Discharged Soldiers Information Department, seeking assistance in the»training of invalid soldiers incapable of following their former occupation. It was resolved to rep'.y that the board was in sympathy with the proposals made to. help the soldiers, but could give no practical help through the Technical School, the classes being attended by school children only. The principal reported that the' ef< forts made by the pupils in aid of thf Red Cross Fund had resulted in £l5B 14s 9d being gathered in in sums of ono penny and a shilling, from over 1000 contributors, whilst the expenses had been nil.

The treasurer renorted that the !•• ceipts for the month had been £l5B 6s, and the expenditure £2ll 6s 4d. Th* bank credit balance was £409 14s. A+> counts amounting to £53 0s 8d wer» , passed for payment. 1 It was decided to connect the school j with the Telephone Exchange.
