QUEEN CARNIVAL.

INDUSTRIAL SECTION,

TIMBER TRADES BRANCH

A meeting of the timber, building and furniture trades branch of the industrial section in connection with the Queen Carnival was held on Saturday evening at the Art Gallery. There was an attendance of about 200, including prominent timber merchants, builders and furniture manufacturers, as well as a. large number of employees in the same industries. Mr W. Goss, who was voted to the chair, spoke of the urgent necessity of those, unable personally to join the colours, doing their utmost to support their country in her hour of need in other ways. It seemed to him that the residents of Christehurch failed to recognise the seriousness of the situation. Nobody passing through the streets of the city that evening would think that a tremendous struggle, involving the Dominion',? existence as a unit of the British Empire, was in progress. It behoved them to set their house in order and rally to the support of those of their nearest and dearest who were risking their lives on. the battlefield. The Queen Carnival afforded a splendid opportunity for those in the industrial section of the community to demonstrate their appreciation of the gallant conduct of the troops. He hoped that as a result of the meeting a strong representative committee would be set up. Mr Rankin moved that a donation of £2 each should be contributed by those present. The motion was not seconded. On the motion of Mr H. J. Otley, seconded by Mr RankiiY, it was <2rcided that a committee should bo. set uy. Mr Goss said that the whole of the money collected would go to the fund, without deduction, the employers undertaking to defray fill the expenses. Officers' were elected as follow: Chairman, Mr Goss, secretary, Mr F. A. Moody; treasurer, Mr E. W. Waller; committee, Hon J. Barr and Messrs Ballinger, W. H. Simmonds, C. E. Otley, W. Mausell, J. A. Scarff, J. M. Lynch, J. Greig, A. K. England, R. Scott, H. J. Nightingale, G. Martin, E. Stocks and W. Walker, with power to add. Mi - Donaldson drew attention to the fact that the Lyttelton Eegatta Committee had offered space free for any side shows at Lvttelton on New Year's Day. On the motion of Mr Ballinger, seconded by Mr Black, it was decided to accept the offer. Various suggestions for raising funds wei-e referred to the executive.
