A meeting ni delegates from the various Lodges in Canterbury, convened by the Friendly Societies' Conference,' was held in the Druids' Hall, Worcester Street, on Saturday evening last, to consider the advisability "of nominating a Friendly Societies'- Queen of the Carnival. Brother J. W. Baty (U.A.0.D.) presided, and explained the objects of tnc meeting. Brother G. T. Battey (secretary of the Mistletoe Lodge, U.A.0.D.), from whom the proposal emanated, outlined the scheme* that his lodge had in view in asking the Friendly Societies to consider the question of nominating a separate queen, and suggested various ways by which funds could be raised for that purpose. Brother A. G. Winter (City of Christchurch Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F.) said that his lodge did not favour a Friendlv Societies section at this stage, as a large number of members of Friendly Societies had already attached themselves to other sections. He mov-ed—'-That this meeting of delegates dcje-3 not approve of the proposal that Friendly bocieties should form a separate section in the coming carnival.'' Brother A. I). Hassall (Rechabites) seconded tin motion, which was carried by 34 votes to 9. Brother Hassall moved 'a hearty vote of thanks to Brother G. T. Uatiey foil bringing this matter before the conference. The motion was seconded by Brother M. J. Hartigan (1.0.0.1'.) and carried. The chairman detailed the work done by the Friend.y Societies' Conference to date, and explained to the meeting the reasons for asking for the formation of a Friendly Societies' Council. A Several delegates reported that their lodges had not yet dealt with the proposal of the formation of the council. On the motion of Brother H. P. Hansen (Lova'l Benevolent. Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F.) it was deciaffJ to adjourn the meeting until January.
