FOR THE FRONT.

PRESENTATION TO OXFORD SOLDIERS. A mooting hold in the East Oxford Town Hall on Tuesday night to bid farewell to soldiers leaving for the front. There was a good attendance, and Mr John Wells, chairman of the County Counc’l. presided. The Hon D. Buddo, M.P.. in a short address traced the work that had been done by both the Allies and the enemy, and showed how necessary it was to leave nothing undone tiiat would secure the overthrow of the euemv. He urged the district to share in the honour of participating jn the victory that would most certainly come. . Captain D. Simson showed lantern slides of the King, the King’s appeal for men. Kitchener, Kitchener’s declaration, and the nurses drowned in the loss of the transport Marquette. The speaker urged a serious consideration of the question of the war. The Allies’ mission was to crush the German ambition of ruling the world, and hostilities must not cease until the enemy cried for peace, on the terms that would be dictated by the Allies. He concluded an interesting address by making a strong appeal to the young men to enlist. On the motion of Air L. Watson, a hearty vote of thanks was conveyed to the speakers. Presentations were made to Lieutenant Gorton and Sergeant Seed, returned soldiers, and to Privates Bonisch and Hyland.

On Wednesday evening Messrs D. and S. Osborne and Leslie Dawe were farewelled by the residents of Willowb.v at a social held in the schoolroom. The Rev W. J. Oxbrow presided, and, on behalf of the district, presented each guest with a soldier's hold-all or outfit. The local Red Cross Society also presented each soldier with a parcel of knitted socks, a Balaclava cap, and a pair of mittens. An excellent programme was given by friends from Tinwald and Ashburton and local talent.
