TRIED TO GET AWAY.

EXCITING SCENE ON WHARF. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 1. There was an exciting scene prior to the departure of the Slaktira for Vancouver last night. It had been reported that a young man of military age was about to leave the country, and about thirty of his fellow employees assembled on the,wharf,- having obtained an hour’s leave from their employer, to see the departing, visitor before he left New Zealand’s shores. As he arrived with his luggage there were loud cries of “Shirker.” A cart containing the would-be passenger and his luggage was turned round, headed up the wharf, and not allowed to return until the ship was clear of the wharf. In the meantime the so-called shirker had a lively ten minutes, and eventually a jeering crowd accompanied the cart and the badly-scared occupant up the street.
