Mr E. Nordon returned from tho north yesterday. ,

Mr F. Cooper, secretary of tho Canterbury Employers’ Association, left for Wellington last night. Detective A. Ward, who has been stationed at Hawke,’s Bay for some time, is visiting Christchurch.

The Rev J. lv. Archer, of Invercargill, lias accepted a call to the pulpit of tho Vivian Street Baptist Church. Mr R. B. Morris, Inspector of Post Offices, is in Christchurch on departmental business. He will remain in town till to-morrow night.

Sir Joseph Ward will arrive . in Dunedin from Southland this evening, and will come on to Christchurch by the second express to-morrow. Private advice has been received ill Ashburton from liondon that Lieu-tenant-Colonel John Findlay, C. 8., has recovered from his wounds. The Hon. Dr M’Nnb, Minister of Justice, left for Temuka at midday, yesterday, where he will continue his recruiting campaign in tho south. Detective Eade has received word that his son. Driver W. J. Eade, of the New Zealand Battery, is convalescent at Alexandria. This is the first notice that Driver Eade was wounded. Air H. Friedlander, who has suffered from ill-health for somo time, attended the. meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday, and was welcomed by members, who gave him a round of applause.

One of the survivors of the British ship Woodford, who are now being held to ransom by North Airican tribes, . is Mr Sturnccn formerly of the Union Company’s service. Mr Sturnee was third officer of the Tarawera. and left the service to join a Singapore shipping firm.

North as General Staff Officer for the .Wellington military district. Major Hickey will succeed Colonel M’Donald as General Staff Officer in Otago. On Tuesday afternoon, Mr J. Readhead, curator of the Ashburton Domain, who is leaving to join the Ambulance Forces, was presented by the Domain employees with a money belt and soldier’s outfit. In the evening Mr Readhead was farewelled by the congregation of the Church of Christ, and was presented with a pair of field glasses. During the evening Captain G. Hefford unveiled a Roll of Honour which has been placed in the church in memory of members of the congregation wiio have gone to servo the Empire. Mr Readhead left Ashburton last evening for Palmerston North. ,

Mr Edwin Cuthbert, engineer to the Christchurch Drainage Board, who lias been on a short visit to Southland, left Invercargill by tho second express on Monday for the north (says the “ Southland Times.”) In company with Mr Olapcott. town engineer, and Mr W. B. Scandrett. he inspected the .Invercargill drainage works, and expressed his approval of the system and its effective inception. Mr Cuthbert was the first town engineer of Invercargill, and Mr Scandrett the first town clerk, both beisg appointed in 1871. Mr Cuthbert gave up his position on being appointed to the Christchurch Drainage Board and Air Scandrett continued in office until 1.893, when ho resigned, becoming councillor in 1894 and Mayor in 1890. The two gentlemen have been close friends since that period and before Air Cuthbert left for the north wero photographed together’,
