LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. [Prp. Press Association*.] WELLINGTON. September 10. Tho sixth round of the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Championship Tournament was got oft this after)’.oon, when play throughout was interesting, much more so, in fact, than might be assumed from tho scores in two of tho games. During the first spell Miss Barr drew first blood, a goal for Can terbury. , The local players, spurred to fresh endeavours, pushed home an attack which ended in Miss Canuck scoring, and half-time sounded without addition to tho tally. In (lie second spell, Wellington assumed a' strong 1 offensive, aud had the . southerners generally defending, and Misses J Pickering -and Dobbyn added two goals each to Wellington's score. The Wairavapa girls Chad no difficulty iu accounting for the Wanganui team. The 1 latter were practically on the defensive throughout both spells. In the first half Aliases G. Grigg, B. Orr and iL. Duley netted goals for Wirirarapa, and Misses Orr and Humphries added two more in the second spell. _ . Manawatu almost brought confusion upon Poverty Bay, whoso career has been like a victorious progress since their late entry into the tourney. In the first spell' Manawaiu did the greater part of thej attacking, but the Gisborne girls' combined work was good 'and their stubborn defence ]iroved impregnable, while now and again they would shift the scene of cperations and deliver spirited assaults on the enemy’s fortress. During one of these forays Miss B. Pearce shot a goal for Poverty Bay, ana the first, spell ended in their favour, I—o. • Desperate efforts were mado by .both sides in the ■ second half, which nroved the best display of tho afternoon. Repeated as saults were mads on Gisborne’s citadel by the Manawatu forces, but always with the f.nmo result—tho attackers were .beaten off after some spectacular but fruitless endeavour*. When Poverty Bay essayed forcing tactics they found their opponents’ protective formations unbreakable, and so tho game ended without further score. The scores to date are:—
