THE IMPERIAL PURCHASES. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 29. " Our purchase of meat on behalf of the Imperial Government passed • the £3,000,U00 to-day," stated the Prime Minister this evening. "This enterprise, as the figures indicate, has grown to very large proportions indeed, in spite of the shortage of ships, and it has been of material advantage to tho people of the country, since farmers have been assured an undisturbed market at good prices for their stock." , xi Mr Massey added that the publication of the figures would show that the shortage of ships, while a serious matter, had not been quite as grave as some people had been led to boiieve. Tho total amount of meat exported since tho outbreak of war was rather greater than the total for the preceding twelve months. The Dominion had boen a million carcases to the good up to tha end of February. In other words, the exports had been a million carcases above tho normal. The shortage of ships had occurred in the succeeding three months.
