WHEAT STATISTICS.

ESTIMATES AND ACTUAL YIELDS

Under the heading of " Wheat," the following appears in the " Monthly Abstract of Statistics " for July, issued by the Government Statistician:—

In the previous issue reference was made to the difference in the total yield as shown by the returns collected from threshing-mill owners and from farmers. Applying the average yield per acre (28.94) to the total area sown, as returned by farmers, gives a total yield of 5,486,069 bushels, but according to the threshing returns received to date, July 20, the actual quantity of wheat threshed was 6,581,629 bushels.

As previously stated, steps are being taken to ascertain the cause of the difference, and, so far, it is found that no returns of areas were furnished in> a number of cases by farmers on whose behalf grain has been threshed. This indicates that the threshings are rev liable and that the total area returned is considerably below the actual area which was under wheat.

A census of the stocks of wheat, oats, and flour in the Dominion was taken on June 30 last, but the final results are not available in time for inclusion in this issue.
