THE WESTERN FRONT. PARIS, July 27.—Yesterday's communique reports that In reprisal for the bombardment of Fumes and Dunkirk the Allies shelled German cantonments at Westeride and Mlddelkerko. In the Vosges the French extended and consolidated the ground oaptured on the orest of Lingekopf, and occupied a pass. Three counter-attacks were repulsed. To-day's report states that there was an Intense cannonade on the Souchez sector. The French completed the conquest of the heights of Llngekopf and Barrenkopf, dominating the principal valley of the Fecht. Several hundred prisoners were taken. RUSSIAN OPERATIONS. PETROCRAD, July 28.—A communique states that the position on ths Dwlna and the N lemon is unchanged. The enemy south-west of Kovno was repulsed on Monday. Russian attacks on the left bank of the Narew held up the enemy, and there were successful Russian attacks on both banks of the rlvor above Serock. A Cerman attempt to approach the Nadarzyn-Plaseczno front on the left bank of the Vistula was repulsed. There has been stubborn fighting at Sokal, where a section of the enemy crossed the river. CERMAN CLAIMS. AMSTERDAM, July 27.—A Berlin official report'states that the Germans repulsed a Russian attack from Mltau, In the Baltic provinces. Russian attempts to push back the Germans advancing across the Narew failed, and the Russians east and south-east of Rozan are being pursued westward. The situation at Warsaw and Novo Ceorgievsk Is unchanged. FIGHTING ON THE BUG. AMSTERDAM, July 27.—A Vienna communique olaims that in the Sokal region the Austrlans stormed a height dominating the crossing of thie Bug and took three thousand prisoners. ITALIAN PROGRESS. ROME, July 27.—A communique records Italian progress at various points. The battle of the Carso plateau continues. A later report announces further progress by the Italians, the enemy being expelled from trenches and redoubts at the bayonet point. The enemy was driven out of Mont Seibusi and 3200 prisoners were taken. POSITION AT CORiZIA. ROME, July 27.—1 tis unofficially stated that the Austrlans have been retreating from Gorlzla since July 26, suffering enormous losses. The evacuation of Podgora is only a question of hours. The plateau of Carso is practically In Italian hands, only a few trenches resisting. TURKISH FEELING. COPENHAGEN, July 27.—An employee of a salvage company, Just arrived from Constantinople, where he v/as repairing warships, states that the Turks are at their wits' end for fuel and ammunition. Turkish feeling against the Cermans is increasingly bitter. There was a big fight fn the Constantinople Infantry barracks a fortnight ago, In whloh ten Cermans were killed and fourtaen wounded. The attitude of the population Is dangerously hostile, and they will undoubtedly rise against the Cermans at the first opportunity.
