COUNTY COUNCILS,

HALSWELL. The Halswell County Council met on Tuesday. It was resolved that Part 11. of the Noxious Weeds Act should be brought into force over the whole of the county. Tenders were opened for the erection of a bridge over the Halswell River at Motukarara, and that of R. Macartney was accepted. The Halswell School Committee wrote regarding the state of the road at the back of the school. It was decided that the matter should bo attended to.

Tho Tramway Board wrote request-' ing the council k> strike a rate of ljd in the £ on the Hacktborne tram area. The letter was received. The PublicWorks Department wrote, authorising the council to proceed with the erection of the Motukarara bridge. The North Canterbury Hospital Beard forwarded a levy of £374 10s for the cun-ent year. It was resolved that the clerk should be instructed to prepare tho rate book, and that at the next meeting of the council the following rate should be made and levied, namely :—General rate, -3d in the_£; separate rate on Cashmere drainage area, }d in the £; and Hackthorne Road tramway area, ljd in the £. Accounts amounting to £134 I6s 4d were passed for payment. SPRINGS. Tho Springs County Council met at Springston on Tuesday; present—Messrs M. F. Ryan (chairman), J. W. Kime, I. Andrew, H. Pannctt, G. I£. W. Stoddart and O. Wolfe. It was decided to fall in with the proposal to a monthly contribution to tihe Poor of Greet Britain, Ireland and Belgium Fund, subject to tho approval of the Audit Department, the council's allotment being] £l3 4s lid monthly. Mr F. C. Murray wrote, thanking the council for the prompt cleaning oi the river throu-.'h his laud and Yarr's Lagoon. Since the cleaning tire level of the water had fallen by ten to twclvo inches-. Mr J. H. "Williams, .Kilef;inere, gave tho council permission to take shingle from his property free of cost. The council's solicitors forwarded a draft oopy of a proposed Bill empowering- tho council to reclaim certain )and3 bordering on Yarr's Liayoon, to provide for tho drainage- of adjoining lands and for improving the flow of the L 1 River. It war. decided to ask the Hon R. H. Rhodes to take charge, of the Bill. On Mr Wolfe's motion, it was decided to apply for a Government grant of £2OO to complete .tho metalling of Fiddler's Road, and for a grant of £3OO for metalling the Rcdge Road. In accordance with notice giver, at tho previous meeting, it was decided to levy a. general rate of id in tho £ in the Sprjns"<ton Riding- on 4 <d i" the Gre-enpark Hiding. It was explained that the increase of 9-6'hs of a penny to- Jd in tho Grccnpark Riding was due to tho latter riding being mora expensive to work, chiefly owing to tho fact that practically all the road metal had to be brought from outside the district.
