ASHBURTON BRANCH
The- monthly meeting of the Ashburton brunch of tho Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday afternoon, Air J. lh Simpson presiding. A letter was read from the Alarlborongli branch asking the Ashburton branch to co-operate in supporting tho foi owing resolution:—“That in regard to the suggested war tax this meeting strongly condemns anything in the nature of a class, tax. considering that ail should contribute according to tl eir moans, and that this meeting favours a universal tax on incomes, something in the manner as suggested by Air Vavasour in his letter to the ‘ Dominion ’ on April 13, the various schemes outlined being a tax oi 2jd ir. the After a short discussion it was unanimously decided to support the suggestion. '1 lie resignation of Air Henderson was accepted with regret and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to him for his past valuable services. -Messrs J. Brown and Acton were elected members and Air Brown was elected on the committee in Mr Henderson's place. The chairman gave a review of the business which had been transacted at the Provincial Conference. _ He also lead a letter from Air G. W. Lead ley stating that the Government Agricultural Department was prepared to carry out experiments with lime as manure on suitable small blocks of land which, members of the union might offer for the purpose, the land to be conveniently situated near a railway and the lime to he supplied free of cost. It was suggested that those members of the union who were willing to offer experimental plots should send in their names to Air C. Brannigan. the fields insnector for the Ashburton district.
