They exceeded their I commander’s highest hopes. The district is dotted with miners’ little houses and occasionally slagheaps. The Germans had converted the houses into strongholds bristling with machineguns. Tho Germans left two thousand dead and it is estimated that altogether their dead number five thousand and that there were at -least thirteen thousand wounded. Fog is hampering further operations. A GERMAN FORTRESS. DESTROYED BY THE BELGIANS. PARIS, March 16. The Belgians captured a windmill at Dixmude which the Germans had transformed into a fortress by means of reconcrete. The Belgians mined it, blowing the mill to pieces and destroying thirty maehine-giins.
