Opportunity was taken by the pupils mid teachers to present Miss Marjorie Macleod, who, after four years' service as pupil teacher, is leaving the scbodi, with a manicure set and a number of books. The Standard VI. children also presented the head master with Christmas gifts in recognition of the excellent results obtained at the examination for proficiency certificates.' UPPER PJCCARTON. The bre»Jcing-up ceremony of the Upper Riccarton School was held on Wednesday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of parents. Mr G. Forsyth, chairman of the School Committee, presided. Musical items and recitations were given by the pupils. Mr G. Witty, M.P.. addressed the children and congratulated them on the patriotic epirii displayed in forgoing their prize money and picnic in order that the money so expended should be devoted to the poor children of Belgium. The sum of £3O had usually been expended in the direction of the purchase of prizes, and this sum hod been handed over to Mr Cyril Ward, consul for Belgium, to be distributed amongst the poor children of Belgium. _ln conclusion, Mr Witty wished the children a, merry Christmas and a. happy New Year, and called for three cheers for the head master of the school end his staff, which was very heartily responded to. The dux medaJ, presented by Mr Witty, wnas won by Master Shirley. Mr English, head master, presented a medal to Master Tucker for excellence in mathematics. The girls and boys of Standard VI. presented Mr English with a handsome pipe and matchbox.. ' The chairman wished the children a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and concluded his remarks by saying he trusted peace would be declared before the reopening of the school, when the committee would guarantee the children the best day's enjoyment in their lives. The visitors were then entertained at afternoon tea by the girls of Standards V. ftnd VI.

OXFORD DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The function in connection with the secondary department of the Oxford High School was held on Wednesday. In the absence of the chairman of tho School Committee, Mr R. B. Dalley provided, and Mr T. W. Adams, representing the Board of .Education, was also present. Tha head masters report showed that «-jough the year had been an anxious one there waa every indication that the attendance in the future would be good. Nearly the whole of the pupils were continuing a •second year, and there was a promise of a good number of new pupils. Brief addresses were given by the chairman, by Mr Adams and the "Rev J. E. Holloway. Prizes, contributed by the teachers, were presented by Air T. W. Adams to the following: For French, gardening and dressmaking— Hilda Morris. Dux—Myers Teasdill. Conduct and attendance^ —Margaret Searell. 'Arithmetio and English—Myers Teasdill. Cooking—Bertha Brown. Geography, history and science—W. Bennett.
