NEWS AND NOTES. \V:ii-siop established a time record for the Auckland Chip when she won on Saturday in 3min 26 2-osec, the previous host being 3niin 23 3-5, associated" with the success of "Master Delava.l in 1906. At all the race meetings held on Saturday the totalisator investments showed an increase compared with the amount handled on "Boxing Day last year. Necktie, who Bnished third in the Summer Cup at the Australian Jockev Club's meeting on Saturday, is a half-sister to Wet Day, who raced successfully in New Zealand ft fow years ago. Imported horses figured prominently in several big events in Australia on Saturday. Necktie, who was third in tho Summer Cup at Randwick. was bred in England, as were Defence, second in the Hopetown Cup at Caulfield, and Poetical, third in the Perth Stakes at Perth. The pacer Bright, who injured himself when he fell while competing m the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington last month, is quite sound again and will be put into work immediately after the holidays. He will probably be racing at the Easter meeting at'Addington. The southern-owned mare Sirrah Jhas been mated this season with Wiltfwood Junr. When racing at Addington last month Antonio injured himself slightly, j and it has been decided to throw the horse out of training until he thoroughly recovers. The pacing mare Soda, who recently lost her foal by Mauritius, is to be i put into work again. j The pacer Tho Whip, who has not teen showing his best form in his: latest races, is having a spell. The trotter Frank Wilke6, who has been in N. L. Price's stable for some time, has been returned to his owner, at Sheffield, and the horse will have' a good spell in the paddock. | Mr G. M. Currio ; of tho Eoatanui stud, near Wangr.nui, is drawing special attention at present to his well appointed breeding establishment. Following on the purchase of the stallion Absurd, by Sindridge Absurdity, comes the announcement that he has secured the three-year-old filly Eulogy, ■ by Cicero—Keiibia, by Upas—Goletta, by Ghlopin—Biserta (half-sister to St Frusquin's dam). Eulogy is in fonl to Coriander, by Spearmint from Admiration, the dam of Pretty Polly. Absurd: and Eulogy will be shipped from Eng- j land early in January and are expected to arrive in New Zealand about thej end of February. I Mowbray was operated on for throat! troubles a few days ago and is now enjoying a rest at Trentham. The son of MemchikorT—Lidy Melton was a brilliant gallontr as a two-year-old, and if back to his best form he would be fit for any company. Unfortunately,. however, he did not fulfil expectations, as a three-year-old. even before his wind became affected. Should the operation be successful he may be expected to win races, but it does nob follow that he will ever be able to. hold his own among the cracks, asi seemed probable in his first season. j Reports from America state that \\ few months »go negotiations were in' progress for the sale of the famous trotting sire, Peter the Great 2.7£, snd bis greatest son. Peter Volo 2.35, the world's champion three-year-old trotter. The sale price was understood to be about £45,000, but owing to the outbreak of the war in Europe 'Jie negotiations were broken off.
