LYTTELTON REGATTA.

NEW YEAR'S DAY FIXTURE. For the regatta to he held at Lyttelton on Now Year's Day the committee has made the programme as attractive and pleasing as possible. The entries for the various events closed on , Wednesday evening, and the respective classes have found plenty of competition. The contest for the Geary Shield, presented by Messrs P. M. C. and' W. C. Geary for competition amongst rowers under tho • age of twenty-oue years, is likely to be the keenest for years. In addition to the shield there is the R. B. Grange gold medal, which will become the property of the winner. To encourage the sport further, the Regatta Committee will also donate a second prize. The shield' and medal are on view at Hulbert's, High Street, together with the Colin Cook Memorial Cup, for competition among senior oarsmen. The motor-boat events are expected to eclipse those seen in previous years. Record entries have been received, and the competition will be keen. The most exciting event of the day will be the hydroplane race, which will take place in the inner harbour. This class of racing is becoming very popular in the Dominion, and in order to give every encottragement the Lyttelton Harbour Board has allowed the Regatta Committee to set off a specially surveyed course inside the moles. This will enable visitors to witness the race from start to finish, whilst the risk of accidents will be considerably, minimised. Since the inauguration of this race two years ago, a number of speedy vessels have been built, and one is credited with a speed of thirty-five miles an hour. The swimming carnival will be under the management of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Council. Captain W. K. Jansen, of the Russian ship Pampa, has kindly placed 1 his vessel at the disposal of the committee as flagship. In the evening there will be an elaborate display of fireworks. '
