FIRES.

TAILOR'S SHOP IN THE CITY GUTTED. Shortly after five o'clock yesterday morning, a fire broke out in a shop in Colombo Street, occupied by Mr Avon A. West, tailor and costumier. The brigade was quickly on tho scene with a chemical; turbine and hose waggon, but the building was gutted. The City Buffet Private Hotel and Mr M. Ferguson's cycle shop, which are attached, suffered very littlo damage. Tho building is owned by Mr E. T. Reece. Tho budding was saved largely by the promptness of the police in giving the alarm, which they did before any ono in the building knew of tho outbreak, and the equally prompt response made by tho brigade.
