BOROUGH COUNCILS.

ASHBURTON. The Ashburton Borough Council met on Monday evening; present—the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) and Councillors F. Ferriman, P. L. Orr, 11. M Elrea, G. Hefford, J. B. Christian and H. A. The Mayor reported a debit balance on the temporary loans account amounting to £2300, and a debit at the Bank of New Zealand of £5134 133 3d, making the total overdraft at £7434 13s 3d. The revenue since last meeting amounted to £691 10s 2d. Permission was granted Haywards Pictures to hold a. picture entertainment on Christmas Night. Six months’ extension of time was granted to the lessee of Glasgow lease T.S. No. 1684 in which to build. It was decided to pay half the cost of erecting a dividing fence between Mr H. P. Milsom’s property and the power-house. The inspector of meat reported the live stock slaughtered at the Fairfield abattoirs for the three months September, October and November was as follows: —Cattle 237, sheep and lambs 2676, pigs 109, calves 12. Nine sheep were condemned. The lease of the Council’s shoo in East Street was transferred from 3. F. Crum to R. Mathieson. Miss E. Kennedy was appointed to the position of librarian at the Library. Building permits to tho amount of £2470 were granted during the month. The Mayor was appointed to attend a meeting of delegates in connection with the fixing of the weekly half-holi-day. Thursday being the day favoured by the Council. The tender of Mr R. T. Hodgson for a Glasgow lease of T.S. life, Havelock Street, was accepted, the rental being £6 10s for the first seven years, £7 10s for the second and £8 10s for tho third seven years. It was decided to hold the next meeting a month from date. Accounts amounting to £360 10s lid were passed for payment. Sitting as a Domain Board, the curator reported that the contractor for painting the Domain buildings and the Baring Square fences had completed his work in a satisfactory manner; also that the conduct of the Senior Cadets during their camp in the Domain had been excellent. The chairman of the Cemetery Board reported a credit balance amounting to £46 17s sd. The revenue since the last meeting totalled £l3 ss.
