THE METROPOLITAN MARKET. YESTERDAY’S SALE Yesterday's sale at tho Addington Metropolitan Yards was what is termed a doub.o market,” inasmuch as there will bo no sa.c next week on account of the Christmas amt New Year holidays. This week the sale was held a day earlier than usual so as to enable ourchnsers to kavo the r purchases slaughtered before tho commencement of tho ■testivo season. There was a somewhat smaller attendance than at some recent sales, and although there was a pood all-rcund entry of nil classes o( stock the yarding was not as largo as might have been anticipa ed under tho circumstances, but nevcrthe.ess there was ample for requirements. FAT CATTLE. Tho warding of fat cattle tota'led 328 head, compared with 323 at the previous sate, 312 on December 9. and 276 on December 2. Although tho animals penned were generally speaking of a uniformly good class, there was an almost total absence cf these extra prime animals which were a feature _ of the previous sale. Competition was again very brisk, and the previous week’s prices were fully main ained, indeed in a few crs.es, there was a slight appreciate 'mprovemeut in values, a'tliouTh it cannot be said ha 1 there was a quotable advance. Buyers were present for practically all lines offered. Quotations are: Ex'ru steers to £l6 ss. Other steers, £8 5s to £ll. Extra heifers to £l2 ss. Oiher heifers, £5 7s 6d to £B. Only -a medium number of storo cattle came forward, the greater number being of an indifferent class, tho condition being poor. Owing to the sale not opening until later than usual, the attendance was not largo, and tho demand was not brisk. A number of lines from Southland failed to find purchasers. A medium ontrv of dairy cows was penned, including some usefm sorts, although there wa.s nothing conspicuously good offered. The demand was on about the same level as last week, prices ranging from £3 to £lO 17s Od. FAT SHEEP. There wero eight races full of fat skeop, and quality was about the snmo as last week. Owing to several butchers having last week secured a- proportion of the sheep which they willl require to carry them over the holidays, and in spito of the fact that some business was done, by exporters in anticipation of tho opening of the works on the first Monday of Hie new year, tho demand compared with tho previous w-eek was un-* satisfactory, and sales cou.d be made only on a lower basis to that of last week. Relatively owes suffered more in proportion than wethers, the decline in the. former class representing a- drop of about Is 6d per head compared with recent rates, whi.st in tho case of wethers values were from par to 6d lower. Tho range of prices was: Extra prime weathers to 28s. Prim© wethers 21s Gd to 265. Lighter we.hers 17s 6d to 21s. Merino wethers 12s Gd to 15s Gd. Prime ewes 17s Gd to 15s Gd. Other ewes 12s to 17s.
