SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. The heavy rainfall daring the night .■eft the training tracks neb and sloppy, consequently no work of importance could be attempted at Riecartou yesterday. Slogan, who has been enjoying a respite in the paddock since he was galloped on while running in the Feudalton Handicap at tho Cup meeting, has rejoined F. Christmas's active brigade, nnd is now doing steady pacing daily. Nightwatch is another who has been recommissioned^after a lengthy respite. The son of • Treadmill and Glenpwlet was in great heart on the course this morning, and nearly, unseated his diminutive pilot. If this useful galloper would only stand a preparation, come good things might easily he expected of him, as lie was amongst the best two-year-olds of liis year. The. following trainers and their charges left Sockburn for Wingatui vesterday by special train:—F. D. Porter—Beacon, Heeltap and Ivillaloo; D. Roberts—Troon, Medley, Bon Spear and Doon: R. W. King—Briar Patch, Petrosus and Umerabov; R. Longley — Banian, Sartorzo and Twelfth Night; A.iM’Aulay—Oriande and Samisen: M. Hobbs—Peg, Scotch Melody, Angelina, Charmilla, Skirl, Down and Honesty; E. Cutts—Holiday; C. Pilcher—Resemblance;- W. M’Donald—Mcddito, First Glance, Meltchikoff, Blitz and Kingsway; R. DriTet-te—Mrirtius and Findhorn; W. H. Thomson—Flora Macdonald, Waitara, Carolus and Cortes; J. M’Combe—Parable, Leading Lady and Afton I^och; and E. Scoullar — Glenowl and Martuk. 'Hie following trainers and their charges left for the West Coast yesterday:—James Pine—Lndrone; J. Biggins—Trilby; D. -Norrie "(representingE. .Scouljar)— Sea King: and D. JVloraglinn—Kilts, Don Chari and Medallist! During D. Moraghan’s absence on the West Const, Salathiel will be underthe care of W. Bush. _ Acceptances for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting will close to-night at nine o’clock. Rumour has it that a well known owner, who frequency rides and drives his own horses, and who occupies a high position in connection with trotting sportj has had a. difference with the liandicnpper over certain adjustments allotted to his horses. Re.at!ons are very strained at present and un ess there is an early settlement of the difference the whole case will form the subject of an inquiry by one of the clubs. The pacer Grandee has again gono wrong and is now to have a lengthy spell. Although the New Brighton Trotting Club has made some temporary improvements in the riders’ and trainers’ accommodation on its course, the rooms are still quite inadequate for the requirements and the club will have to seriously consider further alterat’ons. The weighing room, too, is far from satisfactory., and a new set of scales is urgently required. The Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting, one of the most popular country fixtures in Canterbury, will be held on Saturday, and with so many high-class performers engaged it should provide some very interesting sport. Special trains will. leave at 9.45 a.ra. and 10 a„m., taking Christchurch passengers only, returning after the las* race and reaching Christchurch at 6.40 p.m. and 6.55 p.m. A meeting of the committee of the South Cantoibury Jockey Club was hekl last week. The Ground Committee reported that the erection of the new stand and tea rooms was well forward, and the contractors expected to complete the' work in good time for the next race meeting. The clay which was carted awav from the excavations had been used In filling up the hollow

outside the totalise tor house. This line! been levelled and the committee could now settle whether this ground would be top dressed and sown down or shingled. The high winds which had recently been experienced had blown the loose soil off the ploughed track and stones were again showing up. This track required immediate attention. Mr J S. Turnbull.,, the club’s architect. waited on the committee with plans for an outside stand, which ho explained in detail. He did not intend vising the timber from the old stand. Tho estimated cost was very considerably in excess of the amount allocated. Tlve matter was thoroughly discussed after the architect had retired, and it was considered that it was impossible at tho present time to proceed with the work as suggested by the architect, but it was felt that some provision must be made for the outside public, .at least temporarily, and the Ground Committee was authorised to give effect to the suggestion. A letter was read from the Great Britain, Ireland and Belgian Relief Fund, askr ing for a donation. All the speakers expressed tho greatest sympathy with the movement, nnd notwithstanding the heavy indebtedness of the club it was resolved to donate the same sum as that previously voted for the equipment of the force, one hundred guineas. Mr B. Guinnes, wjvo has left for the front, wrote resigning. It was resolved—“ That all members of this club during their absence on active service be made honorary members.” Hie Wellington Racing Club has secured exceptionally large nominations for the summer meeting and everything points to a Ifighly successful fixture at Trentham next month. Nearly all the best performers in the Dominion claim engagements, but Reputation, Warstep, Postillion and Chortle are notable absentees from the list.’ These four horses would have made a great difference to one or two events. They would, for example, have been especially welcome in the Waterloo Stakes, a weight for age event decided over a mile. It has only attracted thirteen nominations, and they do not read like a high-class lot for such an event, though the race will not lack interest if Antumnus and Emperador are landed at the post in their best form. Two-veav-olds'figure prominently in the Kelburn Plate, a new weight for age race, run over four furlongs, most of the best juveniles being included in the list, but Tatterley, Downham, Tete-a-tete, Bimeter and Chakwana aro a speedy lot of older horses that should keep the youngsters busy. Canterbury stables claim a strong representation in many of the events at the meeting.
