At a special meeting of the Elmwood School Committee, held on Monday evening, to consider applications for the position of second assistant master, after due consideration it was decided to recommend the Board to appoint Mr A. T. Barrell to the position. Dr W. A. Chappie, a member of the House of Commons, and formerly a' resident of Wellington, has reoeived an appointment as Major in the R.A.M.C. Feeling reference was made at the Salvation Army gathering in Palmerston North on Friday evening by Colonel Powley to the death of Adjutant Avery, a Salvation Army officer killed at Hartlepool during the German warship raid on tho English coast a few days ago. Colonel Powley said he was a highly-respected officer and _ a man who had rendered sterling service to the Army in England.
