' THE RECENT ERUPTION. MAINLAND BEACHES STREWN WITH WRECKAGE. [Per Press Association.] TAURANGA, September 25. The ocean beacli near Mount Maunganui is strewn for somo " throe miles with timber and other debris of all descriptions bearing unmistakablo signs of having come from White Island. The debris would probably fill twenty or thirty drays. Pieces of scantling litter the shore by hundreds, and there are tram sleepers showing tho marks where the rails have been laid of lft Gin gauge, also scores of barrel stoves and pieces of barrel beads scattered about. Many articles bear an incrustation of sulphur, connecting the mass of wreckage with tho grim story of Whito Island. A quantity of boat wreckage was found representing two or three different classes of boats, There is a scarcity of signs of house furniture, suggesting the possibility of tho greater portion of the living quarters having been buried where they stood, and tho men with them.
