BEAUTIFYING THE CITY.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS: A long -letter dealing /with planting operations in the city has been sentby Mr H. G. Ell, M.P., to Mr C.;M. : Parker, Kecretaryof the Beautifying Society. ~ . . Mr Ell details, arrangements niad* with Mr W. Jones in regard to site* that ought .to receive . attention. Amcmgst these are the island in im Avon opposite Professor T., G. B. Blunt's residence in Merivale, th*.triangle at the junction of South Crescent Road and Strickland Street, Linwood Avenue and Haaeldean Road. ■ In regard to Haiseldean Road,'it htt been found that it will • not be '■ necessary to obtain the permission of the Railway Department, as was thought at first. All that is needed is to tain the permission of the Cito Council to plant along the northern aide of that road from Coloi.ftb Street to Park Roa4 with cabbage trees, kowhai and ribbonwood. Mr Ell states that none of th«a# trees will grow very high; they are not bushy, and will not obstruct the. vie:* and create any danger in regard .to passing trains. In a very few year*, when the trees grow up, the dark green of the kowhai and cabbage trees and the light green of the ribbon-woods wilt afford a pleasant contrast.'

Mr Ell suggests that the Society should consider a proposal to erect a light • iron fence in the North Park. The fence should be inside the second lot of trees, commencing at the entrance to the Acclimatisation Society** gardens on Riccarton Road arid extending to the entrance gates opposite the Riccarton Hotel. Only a short stretch of,pathway has to be formed, and only a small bridge has to be erected over the creek between, the Domain• Gardens and the' Acclimatisation Society's Gardens. If the present quick fence wa» removed and the space be ween the present pathway and Riccarton Road plant, ed, Mr Ell urges, a beautiful view of the park would be opened up to passersby.
