MEETING OF COMMITTEE.
The general committee of the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union met on Tuesday; present—Messrs L. C.Gar-. diner (president, in the chair), H.'■!). "J. Deans, R. O. Dixon, C. H. EnsOr, W. Hall,' D. Rutherford; A. W* RutherfOrd, jun.,. B. Soth-Smith and FJ H. Labatt (secretary). . In regard to Mr T. D. Burnett's pro posal submitted to the annual meeting when it was resolved that a sub-com-mittee being formed in South Canterbury should work in conjunction with the main committee, it was decided to suggest the following as members oi. the sub-committees with power to a. 1.1 to tho ; r number locally, Messrs T. 1) Burnett, G. Murray, F. H. Smith M.P., J. Withell aud*B. Tripp (con •venor). In reference to the request of Mi E. Short, Commissioner of Stock to', the Panama Exposition, for the co operation of sheepowners in exhibitih; their stock at the Exposition, it was d; cided to bring the matter under th notice of the local advisory committee and that Mr O. H. Ensor may be adde to the committee. A letter was received from the NeZealand Sheepowners' and Farmcu Federation reporting the following r suit of tho shed hands' case heard b fore the Conciliation Council at* Bio: . heim on August 18:—"That the parti had agreed that the matter in dispni stand over till March, 1915, and pit vided the parties were.unable to agiv to the matters in dispute before tho date, the dispute should be referrc to the Arbitration Court for settle ment.'' The president reported what step had been taken by the'Union in otfdc to ascertain the quantity of stoc sheepowners had suitable for freezm; Tho Cbristchurch Meat Company ha offered to freeze stock at their Bur: side works on owners' account and a low for the difference in the railag from Islington. The Canterbury Froz - Meat Company had also decided t open their Belfast works for slaughtei ing and freezing operations on Thursday and Friday of this and next week, and, further, if sufficient stock is offering. It was decided to write and thank the. freezing companies for their action in the matter. , The annual levy at tho rate of 5s per 1000 sheep was struck for the ensuing year ana made payable when the annual sheep returns are available. On the motion of Mr Duncan Rutherford it was decided to offer the sum of £lO as a prize for the machine shearing competition at the Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Show to be held in Noyember n the competition to be subject to the same conditions as those of last year. ..'-' ' Aoplications were received from Technical Colleges for grants towards the shearing classes conducted under their auspices. The committee decided to grant the sum of £25 io each of the following bodies, viz., the Christchurch Technical College, Ashburton Technical Classes, Waimate Technical Classes and the. South Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union, including Timaru and Temuka. Tho grants were made on the understanding that the conditions of last, year's grants, were adhered to. The president stated that at the annual meeting a.. resolution had been passed requesting the Government to prepare a return of cattle in the Dominion on the same lines as the annual return of sheep is prepared. A reply had been received from the secretary of the Department of Agriculture stating that the reorganisation of the agricultural and pastoral statistics is under consideration at the present time and that the suggestion of the Union would be considered.
