BOXING.
CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tho Canterbury amateur boxing championships wore commenced last night in the Theatre Royal before a large audience. The programme consisted of two light and two bantamweight rounds, and three welter-weight rounds, the finals being reserved for the second night. In tho iight-weights N. Vernal! boxed a fairly even three rounds with J. Dempsey. It was fighting more than boxing, and Vcrnall was the more aggressive. Morris and Henderson boxed one round and tho referee awarded the fight to Morris.
In the bantams M’Minn, of Ccalgate, and Thomas, of Christchurch, fought the best match of the night. Thomas commenced with a terribly hard left, hut M’Minn was quick to get away and had a faster right. In tho third round he swung a well-mea-sured right to Thomas’s jaw, and tho count out left M’Minn the winner. Gunn and Munt boxed an even go, in which Munt lacked the ability to push an advantage home, and followedl tho wrong tactics in the first two rounds. Gunn avoided a good deal of punishment by holding, but got a iair decision.
I In the second half J. Hcatloy, of Ashburton, and E. M’Minn boxed an exhibition bout at welter-weights. I 'ln tho championship welter-weight ! Toner,' of Christchurch, got tho decision over Grey, who went down on his knees to remove an artificial denture and was disqualified for going down without being hit. Penrose and Bradley fought a willing go, and Bradley after being nearly knocked out, and nearly knocking his opponent out, took the count through sheer exhaustion.
