[From Dor Correspondent.]
INVERCARGILL, June 13. Edward Casper, a man about fifty years of age, was charged befovo Mr Hutcheson to-d-- with assaulting and beating his nio-uer, Barbara Casper, a very old woman. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Remer said that the charge originally stood as one of assault, causing actual bodily harm, but as the injuries were trilling he asked his Worship to amend it to one of common assault. The evidence was' that shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday accused went to his mother’s house, East Invercargill, and sat down beside her at the.fireside. Without any words being spoken or any provocation whatever lie picked up the poker and struck her on the bead. Accused had been for some time in a mental hospital. This was some years ago. Both his sister and his mother stated that he had lately been suffering from queer turns. The police asked for a remand so that accused might be kept under medical observation.
His Worship: What have you to say to that? Defendant: I had two or three bottles of beer. I went home and complainant began poking the firo and talking loudly. His Worship: I want to know what you have to say regarding the adjournment. * Defendant: That will do very well. I want to see a doctor anyhow, as I have something in my eye. Sergeant Remer said that defendant had been in the Supreme Court ail the week and was labouring under the delusion that he had a case and wanted to see Judge Denniston. The case was adjourned for a week..
