The winter meeting of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club was commonced yestordav in the presence of a largo gathering of spectators. The weather was dull during the morning, and after the first race had been run a bitterly cold south-west gale blew up, bringing heavy rain. Thereafter tho conditions wore wholly unpleasant, arid tho racing evoked littlo enthusiasm. The going soon became very sloppy, and many woil supported competitors appeared to bo quite unable to f *le down. Going out oi the stmght, Regina Belle and Muricata were still in charge, and at the half-mile post Muricata was taken to tho front and, trotting very soundly, she drew right away, winning by fifty yards from Dr Chutney, who was three lengths in front of Tommy C, with Frandocia fourth and Pearl Child fifth. Puro Gold lost ground at tho start, and Kira led from Margo and Cocoon. Cocoon fell at the entrance to tho straight, broke one of his legs and shot his rider over tho rails. ' Simon Pure bumped into Ooooon and fell. Kim led Mcrrio Valet past tho stand, where Salathiel nearly came down. Kumalpi was Tunning last. Kim led over tho mile jump, Lord Frederick next, then Freak and Kurnalpi. Pure Gold moved up a bit, and, with five furlongs to go, Lord Frederick nearly was caught, but the latter went away again. At the throo furlong maTk Kurnalpi challenged Kim, and tho pair raced well clear into the straight, where Margo joined them. Kurnalpi at onco tired, and Margo and Kim fought out a desperate finish. With half a mile to go Reval was challenged by Magdala, and the latter was in front in a few strides and Reval foil away beaten. With two furlongs to go Glenfinnan rushed up to Magdala. but the latter led into the straight and stojled off a good challenge by The Comet and Glenfinnan, winning by half a length. True Blue was in charge approaching the water jump, with Block' Sea and Sportsman lying next, and Black Sea led over the hedge at the bottom of tho straight from True Blue. >.' Crossing the •■stand double Black Sea was just in front of Sportsman, True Blue and The Gunner in that order, Reneo being the only other horse standing! up. Going to the post and rails Sportsman led Black Sea and The Gunner. Black Sea unseated her rider nt tho sod wall. Coming to tho board fence Sportsman, True Blue and The Gunner were in close order. Renee, who was lying handy, threw out at the post and rails at tho four furlong post. From this on Sportsman pulled away, and safely negotiating tho last two obstacles, won comfortably by over threo lengths from True Blue, who "beat, easing, up. The Gunner by half a dozen lengths. In the Stewards' Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting yesterday, Dssdemona, who wa* going unevenly, ran too close to the fence at the turn going out of the straight, and the. sulky struck a- post The driver was thrown out, but clung to the reins and brought the mare to a standstill. The incident looked likely to cause an ugly accident, but the driver's presence of mind saved the situation and he was heartily applauded. A. G. Wilson, driver of Kirwee in the Final Handicap at tho Canterbury Park Club's meetingj; was fined £5 forleavincr the mark before his time. A similar penalty was imposed on E. Logan, rider of Stanley's Child, who went off too soon in the Railway Handicap.
