KING'S BIRTHDAY.

CELEBRATIONS IN CHRIST. CHURCH. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME, The King's Birthday will be observed as a general holiday in the city to-day, and a long list of gatherings, has been prepared. • ; - Tno occasion, will bo marked in a strictly, official way. by a parade of Territorials in Hagley Park at 9 a.m. The troops will be in charge of Colonel G. J. .Smith, officer commanding the Canterbury Infantry Brigade. The inspecting officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Chaft'ey, will arrive at the saluting base at nine o'clock,, and the E Battery will then fire a Royal salute. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club will hold its winter meeting at the club's course. ..: ; . From an athletio point of view the day will be an important one. A seven-a-6ido football tournament will be held at Lancaster Park to obtain funds to reduco the debt on the training hall. The tournament will- begin at 10.15 a.m. An Association football match will be played at Richmond" Park, beginniug at 2.46". p.m., between Canterbury and Westland, for the Brown Shield. There will be several important hockey matches. Two representative matches will bo played at Sydenham Park, South Canterbury meeting Canterbury A, and Ashburton meeting Canterbury B. In addition, at the same place, there will be a five-a-side tournament, beginning at 9.30 a.m. The Ladies? Hockey Association will hold a six-a-ride tournament on the Polo Grounds. The Christchurch and. Ashburton Golf Clubs will meet on the Shirley links, and games will he played on other links. . The North Canterbury Motor-cyclists' Club will hold a reliability trial, the cyclists leaving Christchurch at 8 a.mfor Akaroa. At 2 p.m. the Hon R. H. Rhodes, Postmaster-General, will open the King . George V. Coronation Memorial Hos- , pital on the Cashmere Hills.
