FINED FOR ILL-TREATING CHILD. [Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, June 1. Boforo Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., at Riverton* to-day, a married woman named Nellie M’Creath was charged with that being the mother and having the custody of Gladys M’Creath, aged four years and a half, she did wilfully ill-treat the child in a manner likely to cause it unnecessary suffering. I'rom evidence it appeared that on May 15 the attention of a constable was directed to the child, and on examination he found it a mass of bruises from head to hod. with some abrasions and marks about its face. The little one was taken to a doctor, who upon examination described it as a shocking case. Tlie woman was fined £lO and expenses, or in default two months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, and the custody of tho child was taken from her.
