SUMNER BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE

A meeting of the committee of the Sumner Beautifying Association was held last night at Mr Barber’s house. Nine members were present, and Dr Gossett presided. The sub-committee appointed at tho last meeting to ascertain wliat further planting was required and to interview Mr G. Humphreys, stated that Mr Humphreys had urged that too great a variety of trees should not bo planted. It had "been decided to plant thirty silver beeches and a few cabbage trees on Wakefield Avenue, between the bridge and Mr Kingscote’s gate; twenty white thorn and other varieties over Newman’s Ivnob, and tweifty mountain ash between die knob and the gasworks, Eighteen trees were reported to have died near the knob and 126 on Scarborough. Included in the report was a letter from Mr Pratt stating that the trees were in readiness for planting out and .that it was advisable to dig the holes immediately. The report was adopted, and it was decided to procure the necessary trees, besides stakes and netting for protection. . . A deputation consisting of Dr Gossett and Messrs Unwin and Parson was appointed to wait on the Borough Council at its next meeting m connection with tho usual grant of trees for planting, and also to apply for leave 1 to plant Wakefield Avenue and Day's Garden. . ■A sub-committee consisting of Dr Gossett find Mr Parson was appointed to report at the next meeting, to be held in a fortnight's time, as to the trees most suitable for planting outside thb Park in Scarborough, and I also to interview the town clerk with reference to tho shifting of trees at the foot of the cliff near Shag Rock, the Council having objected to these trees being planted too near tho water and drainage mains. Mr H. N. ’Buttle, sen., was elected a member of tlio committee in place of Mr H. B. Sorensen, jun. It was decided to hold a working bee on Saturday for tho purpose of tho further planting operations 011 Richmond Hill.
