SOUTH CANTERBURY ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of t.he South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Thursday afternoon. There was a very largo attendance and Mr J. S. Rutherford presided. The chairman referred to. the death of the late Mr Howell, and proposed that a resolution of sympathy should bo passed to the members of his family ho having been a life member of the Society and one who had rendered it good service. The motion was carried in silence, those present standing. The eighteenth annual report congratulated members on the continued prosperous condition of tho Society. Tho revenue for the year had amount ed to £613 18s. The amount received for licenses had been £22 6s less, than last year. Some of this decrease might bo accounted for by tho fact, that tho Ashburton Society had appointed agents in the Temuka district for tho sale of licenses.. me Society was improving tho stock of fish in the river by imp r rtir>" from othpr dr tricts. ~ Tho breeding of the mallard duck had proved vo. y successful. birds being liberated , this year at tho Washdyke Lagoon. Tho Society had gone fully into tho question of . fish nonds and had inspected various sites for this purpose. Shags were plentiful and the Society, had paid out £42 17s 9d for heads and eggs, which ,vas a large increase on tho amounts paid in previous years. Tho balance-sheet showed tho expendit ture to have been £SBO Is Bd, and the ’receipts £613 18s, leaving a credit balance of £33 16s 4d.- There was an excess of assets over liabilities amounting to £B9l 13s 3d. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. The secretary said that three nominations for scats on tho Council had boon received too late and consequently those names did not appear on the lisi of candidates. The nominations had been posted on the Saturday but he did not receive them until the Monday. After a lengthy discussion Mr L O’Callaghan moved that the secretary should be commended for his correct interpretation of tho rules, and that the nominations in dispute should be admitted by ballot. The motion was carried. The following Council was elected:--Mackenzie County. Messrs Foster. F. Neill and J. S. Rutherford; Timaru Messrs J. S. Lawrie, T. C. Palliser. J E. Pigot, A. Hope and L. B. James; Temuka, Messrs A. Bushell, R. .J----M’Callum, W. F. Evans, W. G. A'spmall and E. P. Pridham. At a meeting of the Council held after the 'annual meeting Mr J. S. Rutherford was re-elected president. Mr W. G. Aspinall vice-president, Mr i A. Bushell treasurer, and Mr W. D. Revell auditor.
