CEREMONY TO TAKE PLACE ON

WAIAU, May 31. Arrangements aro being proceeded with in connection with the turning of the first sod of the Culverden-Waiau Railway. The Hon 11. H. Rhodes has telegraphed expressing his pleasure in acceding to the settlers' request that the sod should be turned at the Waiau end. Wednesday, June 10,. is definitely fixed as the date of the ceremony. Tlie programme lias been arranged provisionally as follows:—Visiters by the express will bo motored to Waiau, and on arrival at Culverdeu they will lunch there with the League- The ceremony will take place about 2.30 p.m. A commemoration oak is to bo planted, and those present will bo entertained by the League at afternoon tea. The evening function depends on the ability of the Minister and the visitors to stay overnight. Invitations have been issued to the Prime Minister and the members of the Ministry, the Mayor of Christchurch, the president and members of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce, District Resident Engineer, the president and secretary of the Provincial Farmers' Union, the president of the Kaikoura Railway League, chairmen of adjacent local bodies, Canterbury member of Parliament and members of .the Legislative Council, and other prominent public men.
