FIFTY YEARS AGO.
(From tho "Lyttelton Times" of Saturday, May 28, 1864.) Launch at Akaroa.—The launch of ai fino ketch from the yard of Mr James Wilson, Duvauchelle's Bay, Akaroa, took place on Monday, May 23. The vessel which was built to the order of E. O.'Latter, Esq., is 66ft in her keel, 18ft Sin breadth of beam, 6ft 6in depth of hold, and about 110 tons builders' measurement. Mrs Latter named tho vessel the Spray, breaking tho customary bottle of wine. A number of visitors from Akaroa and elsewhere wore present, everything (including tho vessel) going off smoothly.
Intelligence was received from England by tho last mail that Air Robert Speechley has been selected by Mr G. G. Scott," with tho approval of MrSolfe, as tho superintending architect 0 f Christeliuroh Cathedral. Ho is expected to arrive -in Canterbury by tho ■ Amoor,
