THE MEAT TRUST.

WARNING BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT. Mr E. G. Stavoley, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, in his address at the quarterly meeting of the Chamber yesterday, referred to the danger of the Meat Trust coming to New Zealand. ■ ''Lately," he said, "there has been some discussion and apprehension in regard to tho American Meat Trust. We know that it is established in Australia, and there is a strong suspicion that in this dominion also its business is beiug conducted. One might fairly assume that its tactics will be the same as those it employs elsewhere—good prices and a lavish expenditure of capital m the early stages, with a subsequent ' squeeze' when it has got a secure footing. Doubtless those who control our various freezing works and shipping interests in New Zealand will frustrate anv attempts on the Trust's, part to acquire these indispensable adjuncts to our welfare."
