LAND PURCHASES.
PRICES OF ESTATES. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, May 29. The Government spent £531,828 last financial year in acquiring and subdividing estates under the Land for Settlements Act. To meet this expenditure debentures were issued to the amount of £306,000, £340,183 was derived in rents from estates, £135,661 from the sale of Crown lands, besides other sums, making a total cf £1,052,981. This enabled the estates to be purchased. £50,000 worth of debentures was redeemed, £247,689 was paid in interest, £67,410 was applied to sinking funds, and a cash balance of £64,297 remained at the end of the year.'
